人文科学 (Humanities) は、その名の通り、人間の営みを理解する試みである。しかし人間も生物界 の一員である限り、人間本性への探求は、必然的に生物としてのヒトの理解を伴っていなければならない。実際、19 世紀のダーウィン進化論の誕生以降、生物学は我々の人間観・道徳観・社会観に対し て大きな影響を及ぼしてきた。本授業では、現代の生物学の哲学(Philosophy of biology)における議論を参照しつつ、生物学の哲学的含意を考察する。
The humanities is an attempt to understand human activities. However, as long as humans are part of the biological world, the search for human nature must necessarily be accompanied by an understanding of humans as biological organisms. Ever since the birth of Darwin's theory of evolution in the 19th century, biology has had a great influence on our view of human beings, morality, and society. In this class, we will examine the philosophical implications of biology, referring to the debates in the contemporary philosophy of biology.
